The information below may help with confusion regarding many of the new methods of learning and explain more about the Common Core Standards. In the 25 years since I have been teaching, the schools have gone from paper and pencil and no technology (computers, document cameras, iPads etc...), to a word immersed in everything technology.
Children growing up in the 21st century are are required to think at higher levels. They are not to just say for example 2 + 2 = 4. Students need to be able to support and explain their thinking.
Many parent ask why so much is different. As mentioned above, technology has a huge part but also Common Core Standards can answer that question. They were designed to enable future generations to succeed in an ever changing world.
Below is information from the Common Core Website
" Today’s students are preparing to enter a world in which colleges and businesses are demanding more than ever before. To ensure all students are ready for success after high school, the Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Common Core focuses on developing the critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills students will need to be successful." Click below for the 4th grade standards.
